...but this is a question that only people well-versed in the Dead's music can answer...

What is your LEAST favorite Grateful Dead song, the one you most hate to suffer through? I don't mean an occasional breakout like "Day Tripper," but a much-played song that appears again and again in these shows...that you simply can't stand?

To kick it off, and to make myself a vortex/target for all the bloody-mindedness that's been floating around this Forum of late, my pick is:

Not Fade Away

Can't stand it...never could. *putting on Class 5 armor* Let er rip, Heads! ;-)

I agree with NFA, but only in years after the titanic 77 versions.

But man, a Throwin > NFA to end shows in the late 80's and 90's were just boring.

Me & My Uncle > Mexicali's are over done as well.

A rare one for sure, but nonetheless a snoozer for me - To Lay Me Down.

Also nothing worse than Jer mumbling his way through Foolish Heart. Such a great tune, but he couldn't remember the words half the time.

Far From Me

Yeah my first answer is a cop out, I did not enjoy most of the Dough Knees I heard live (the '80s), but do enjoy the earlier versions that have life in them still.

Not too keen on the actual song part of Playin', though I do like the jam part (why did they have to sandwich all that good improvisational jamming between those rather lame lyrics?

agreed about Dough Knees. a bit of a throwaway song, much like Sat Nite became

never mind (as someone earlier mentioned) the "every show" rendition of Thow It Away :) god, did they even close a show with anything but that in 87-89??? (sarcasm, kinda)

Friend of Mine, especially, but for the most part, I don't care for the "slow, creepy" songs (as someone above dubbed them.)

And now that some of the kids are starting to "offer" their opinions (though I don't recall asking) on what we should be listening to in the car, I have found that they tend to choose the more uptempo songs (short PITB's and TOO's, Bertha, and the singing parts of Fire) that's a compromise I can live with.

Anything - absolutely anything - by Brent Mydland is utterly disposable and has me lunging for the skip button. I'm none too fond of Sailor/Saint either

But I'm going to put in a vote in favour of the cowboy songs because I like them - I loved the groove Garcia got going on a good El Paso - effortlessly rolling sparkling cascades of notes from the fretboard.

A song that I liked initially, but then grew EXTREMELY weary of was Throwin' Stones. May have been set placement as much as anything else.

Jesus! I can not believe you where the only one that agrees that Day Job just crashed the show every time it was played! Thankfully it was a closer so that we could leave to sell our wares in the parking lot and get to after show festivities!

From the annotated Dead lyrics' site:

Hunter, in his Box of Rain, notes that "This song was dropped from the Grateful Dead repertoire at the request of fans. Seriously."

regarding broken arrow: I had to confirm that this was the robbie robertson and not the neil song...

Brown skinned Indian on the banks
That were crowded and narrow,
Held a broken arrow?

I will have to find a version and see how it sounds, but I can only guess based on the year.

I really dislike I will Take You Home.I always hated that tunecoming out of space. It was a letdown.I love a good Playin'(one of my favorite tunes '72-'74), but I definitely agree with jglynn on his comment about the "song part".I'm not a big fan of those short ones they played in'71.

Smokestack Lightning.... boring blues. Didn't even care for Pigpen's versions, let alone Bobby's. Along those lines, I'd add Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.

Picasso Moon was just dripping in good ole Bobby cheesieness. Never could tolerate it all that well. I agree above on Throwing Stones too, it just always came off as a pompous song ; though musically it had it's moments.

Love the responses, especially since Black Peter and It Must Have Been The Roses are two of my favorite songs, lol (I love the slow and creepy numbers, what can I say?) But differing opinions is whats I want! I am in 100% agreement over the suckiness of Throwing Stones though.

That's an easy one:

Samba in the Rain

Not to hijack the theme, but two songs I original couldn't stand that really ended up growing on me were Victim and Eternity.
